Alchemy: The Lustre of Hill End is a bespoke interpretive exhibition located within the adaptively reused FRS Fire Shed in the historic town of Hill End. Drawing on the region’s rich archive of photographic material, the exhibition explores the town’s cultural and artistic legacy through a series of tailored spatial experiences.

The existing heritage structures and the building’s fragmented, irregular interior volumes informed the exhibition strategy. Rather than resisting these constraints, the design embraces them, shaping content and interpretation to suit the idiosyncrasies of each space. Innovative display techniques and atmospheric lighting create an immersive and reflective environment that encourages visitors to spend more time engaging with the town’s stories. The exhibition contributes to Hill End’s cultural vitality while supporting longer visitor stays and deeper understanding of this living historic village.
