Astakos Marrickville marked the introduction of a new brand and the client’s first move into a shopping centre environment, representing the next chapter of a long-established family business with its origins in the Flemington Markets. The brief was to create a contemporary seafood retail environment that expressed openness, transparency and confidence, while acknowledging heritage and experience.

The design balances youthful energy with material gravitas. A deep green gloss tile with a subtle patina references the ocean and fresh produce, paired with black stone benchtops containing natural inclusions that ground the interior and provide contrast. These elements are deliberately restrained, allowing the seafood display to remain the primary focus.

Responding to the curved tenancy geometry, the layout enhances visibility and flow. A continuous lighting pelmet references traditional shopfront glazing, reinterpreted through fluted glass and aged bronze detailing. Dark ceilings and pared-back wall finishes recede visually, creating a clear, legible backdrop that reinforces product quality and customer engagement within a modern market setting.
